Lewis and Clark County 4H Shooting Sports Club Receives Donation from Chapter
January 3, 2019 by Shelley Murphy
Jeff Sturm, Headwaters Chapter of Pheasants Forever board member, presented a check for $400 to Scott Allen with the Lewis and Clark County 4H Shooting Sports club. This money will allow Scott to give scholarships to at least 4 kids who otherwise might not be able to participate. As the Shooting Sports club grows the Headwaters Chapter is committed to growing its support of this great program. A big thank you goes out to our members who were so generous in paying up for auction items at our 2018 banquet that were targetted at supporting youth programs.

Chapter Board member Mark Studt, and Chapter NYLC (National Youth Leadership Council) member Luke Murphy, packed their bags and hit the road for a tried and true South Dakota pheasant hunt. Winner South Dakota is home to T-bones Treehouse Lodge which graciously hosted the event. The hunt and activities were sponsored by The Rosebud Chapter of Pheasants Forever (South Dakota). Mark and Luke enjoyed a couple days of South Dakota birds as well as some evening shooting competitions. We won't say who won those fast draw matches.... Other NYLC members from around the US ventured to South Dakota for the event as well. The National Youth Leadership Council of Pheasants Forever is a fantastic opportunity for youth to get involved in Pheasants Forever and habitat conservation. We are proud to have our own Headwaters member, Luke Murphy, representing Montana on the NYLC.

The Headwaters Chapter of Pheasants Forever had another successful youth hunt. We hosted 6 kids, all with different backgrounds and shooting skills, on our annual hunt. We had a couple roosters harvested and saw plenty of others along the way. The habitat is outstanding this year and it seemed as if the bird numbers were good. Huge thank you to chapter members Pat Howe, Kirk Miller, Matt Murphy, Luke Murphy, Greg Wirth and Morris Haney for showing the kids a great day. Photo credit to Pat Howe.

Our Youth Hunt took place on Saturday September 23rd at the Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area. We had seven eager young men who put in the miles on the ground which resulted in everyone having shooting opportunities and a number of wild roosters being harvested. Thanks again to Luke Murphy and Greg Wirth for organizing the event and for MT Fish Wildlife and Parks for hosting the event. Matt and Shelley Murphy, Pat Howe and Kirk Miller also brought their bird dogs and helped mentor the young hunters. Photo credits to Pat Howe, Shelley Murphy and Kirk Miller

We were invited to participate in Blackfoot Brewery's community night this past week. Headwaters Chapter members gathered from 5-8pm and $1.00 from every beer sold was donated to the chapter during this time. Mother Nature and the College National Championship game may have slowed traffic a little but overall, we had a great night and met a few new members. Always a success and happy to be represented so well. Thanks Blackfoot and Headwaters members!
